Gettysburg facts

1. The first day of the Battle of Gettysburg started at 6:00am and ended at 4:30pm

2. The Gettysburg address was to dedicate part of the land to the soldiers that died there

3. when the south retreated form the battle the north followed them but a river they had to cross flooded because of rain

4. Another reason why lee toke his troops to Gettysburg may have been to raid a shoe factory

5. The strength of the Union army at Gettysburg was about 94,000 . The South was outnumbered, and had only 72,000.

6. Over a 3 days , the Union had 23,055 casualties and the Confederacy had 23,231.

7. Col. Joshua L. Chamberlain of the 20th Maine successfully held his line (the very far end of the left flank) against a lot of Confederate charges. When his men ran out bullets, Chamberlain did a bayonet charge. It was a bold move, but it worked out.
